Heating, Cooling and Fireplace Requests for Markdale Homes

Markdale is the former Village of Markdale, which joined the Townships of Artemesia, Euphrasia and Osprey on January 1, 2001 to form the Municipality of Grey Highlands, in Grey County. The Municipality's servicing sheet calls it the only fully municipally serviced community in Grey Highlands, with 722 water and 700 wastewater connections, and the Municipality's own address is 206 Toronto Street South in Markdale. Whether a home is on that water and sewer service, and which utilities bill it for gas and power, shapes the checks below.

Natural gas
Union Gas held a franchise agreement (E.B.A. 696) and a certificate of public convenience and necessity (E.B.C. 221, dated September 25, 1995) for the former Village of Markdale. On October 8, 2015 the Ontario Energy Board approved a single 20 year franchise agreement with the Municipality of Grey Highlands and granted a single certificate for the Municipality, except a small part of the former Township of Artemesia served by Enbridge Gas Distribution, and cancelled the Markdale certificate.

Electricity (2008 record)
Hydro One's public notice for its 2008 rate harmonization application (OEB file EB-2007-0681), which the Municipality of Grey Highlands filed with its April 2, 2008 request for observer status, said Hydro One had gained customers by acquiring local utilities starting in 2000, and proposed that customers whose Hydro One bills showed a Markdale residential or general service type pay the same delivery rates as other Hydro One customers in the same rate class.

What to Check for a Markdale Property

01

What the Grey Highlands permit lists say about heating work

The Grey Highlands permit list names a woodstove or wood burning fireplace but not a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump, puts a gas fireplace on the no-permit list, and tells owners to consult Building Services when in doubt. For equipment the lists leave open, have the provider ask Building Services and settle who applies through Cloudpermit. The drawing requirements for a wood burning appliance ask for a detailed installation plan and the manufacturer's installation instructions. Normal inspections include an HVAC rough in, so decide early who books it. The Municipality does not review electrical work: ESA treats the electrical permit as separate from the building permit, notes a job may need both, and says a hired Licensed Electrical Contractor should file it, so ask who will for a new heat pump or air conditioner circuit.

02

Markdale water service, meters and private systems

Markdale is the only fully municipally serviced community in Grey Highlands, yet the Municipality's servicing sheet says pockets of properties in Markdale are understood to be on private wastewater services, so confirm which applies to your home before equipment that drains or uses water is planned. The Municipality also runs a water meter replacement program for Markdale water system users: each new meter goes inside near the main shut off valve, usually in the basement, and owners are asked to keep that space clear for the installer. If boiler or humidifier work needs the water shut off to the house, the Municipality asks for a request to enviro@greyhighlands.ca at least 48 hours before the shut off time, and fees apply under its rates by-law.

Markdale's gas franchise, the 2008 power record and rebate groups

Union Gas held the natural gas franchise for the former Village of Markdale, which the Ontario Energy Board folded into a single Grey Highlands franchise in 2015, and Union Gas and Enbridge Gas Distribution amalgamated as Enbridge Gas Inc. on January 1, 2019. Hydro One's 2008 rate notice mentioned bills showing a Markdale service type, a record now dated, so read the distributor's name off a recent bill before planning a heat pump or electric heating change. The gas account and the main heating fuel then decide which Home Renovation Savings heat pump group, if either, a Markdale home fits: an active Enbridge Gas residential account with a natural gas furnace or boiler as the main heat, or a home on the Ontario grid heated by oil, propane, wood or electricity. Either way, the program requires pre-approval before installation.

  • For a wood stove, wood burning fireplace or gas fireplace, the make and model, and whether the manufacturer's installation instructions are on hand.
  • If the work involves a boiler, humidifier or other water connection, where the main water shut off valve is and whether the new municipal water meter has been installed.

Confirm before work is agreed

Markdale is listed in the configured service area, which is not confirmed coverage. Your request is shared with a service provider for review.
